JURAJ: Poznanie je akumuláciou a nepretržitým prúdením, povedal Karl Popper. Ale čo je potom test parfému naslepo? Úplný protipól k tradičnému testovaniu parfémov. Stalo sa niečo zaujímavé – dvaja blogeri na jednom mieste s dvoma rôznymi pohľadmi na rovnaký parfém. Prišiel som do prekrásnej parfumérie 1907 v srdci Košíc, ktorá ukrýva voňavé poklady. Vo vnútri na mňa čakal môj súper, ktorý ma vyzval na duel. Parfumériu vedie majiteľka a kreatívna riaditeľka 1907 Evka Škovranová a jej pravá ruka Štefan Kopeščanský, ktorý je veľkým milovníkom parfémov, rovnako ako ja. Štefan a ja sme boli konfrontovaní s jedným parfémom. Vyzval ma na blogerský duel. Bol to test naslepo. Test parfému, ktorý náhodne zo všetkých vybrala nezaujatá osoba. Takže som mohol zabudnúť na všetky svoje vedomosti a nechať pracovať predstavivosť.

Something interesting happened – two bloggers in the same place with two different visions on a same perfume. I came to beautiful 1907 perfumery in the heart of Kosice that is hiding some fragrant gems. Inside was waiting my challenger that called me for a duel. Perfumery is run by creative director, Evka Skovranova and the perfumery director Stefan Kopescansky who is a big perfume lover like me. Stefan and me, we confronted in one perfume. He challenged me to a blogger’s duel. It was a blind test on a perfume chosen by neutral person. So, I can forget about all the knowledge I have and let myself to the flow of imagination.

ŠTEFAN: Jeden nápad, jedna vôňa. 2 blogeri, 2 navoňané papieriky , 2 názory. S Jurajom sme voňali naslepo. Výborný spôsob, ako sa nenechať zviesť z cesty obalom a jeho písmenkami. Len vôňa v celej jej nahej kráse. Anonymná správa pre naše nosy.  Obraz vyparený do vzduchu. Privoňal som k papieriku a mal som jasno. Spoznal som ju! Áno, priznávam, som vo výhode. Poznám svoje „nástroje“. Z takmer 300 vôní, ktoré máme v parfumériach 1907 rozpoznám naslepo takmer všetky. Tréning, dobrý nos a zmysel pre detail. Ešte si pamätám, keď som ju ovoňal prvýkrát. Bolo to niekedy začiatkom roku 2015. Prekvapila ma.

ŠTEFAN: One idea, one fragrance. 2 bloggers, 2 fragrant blotters, 2 opinions. We blindly smelled with Juraj. Excellent way how to ignore the packaging and the letters written on it. Only the fragrance in its nude beauty. Anonymous communications for our noses. A picture evaporating in air. I smelled the blotter, and it was clear. I knew her! Yes, I confess I have an advantage. I know my “tools”. From almost 300 fragrances that we have in 1907’s perfumery, I can blindly recognize most of them. Training, a good nose and care for details. I still remember when I smelled it the first time. It was sometimes at the beginning of 2015. It surprised me.

JURAJ: A je to tu! Parfémová výzva, milí čitatelia. Jedna myšlienka, jeden parfém, dva testovacie papieriky, dva názory, dva testy naslepo a jeden spoločný príspevok. Ako hodnotiť tento parfém? Strach!? Nie! Ale obávam sa, že nebudem schopný rozpoznať všetky zložky tohto výtvoru. Tento bol vybraný neutrálnou osobou, ktorá nastriekala parfém na testovacie papieriky oboch, bez toho, aby sme vedeli čo to je. Samozrejme, Majster Štefan je pravdepodobne v miernej výhode, pretože by mal byť schopný rozoznať, čo má v parfumérii. Skutočne neviem, čo voniam, bolo mi to dané pod nos a ja mám z toho silný čuchový zážitok. Tento výlet do Košíc bol naplnený úplne na doraz, a touto parfémovou výzvou ešte viac.

JURAJ: This is it! A perfume challenge is here, beloved readers. One idea, one perfume, two blotters, two opinions, two blind tests and one common post. How to evaluate this perfume? Fear!? No! But afraid that I will not be able to detect all the notes in this creation. This one was chosen by a neutral person that have put a perfume on a blotter tester to both of us without knowing what it is. Of course, probably Mister Stefan is in slight advantage because he is capable to know what is in his perfumery. I really do not know what I am smelling, it has been put under my nose and I am having enthusiastic olfactive experience. This voyage to Kosice was a full blast, this perfume challenge even more.

Juraj Sotošek-Rihtarec: "So now read!"

JURAJ: Tento neobvyklý výtvor vo mne vyvoláva dvojitý vnem – kovový a kvetinový. Keď som to skúšal prvýkrát na koži, do popredia sa dostávali kovové tóny. Štefan mal malý úsmev na tvári, pretože tento efekt je nádherný a domnieval sa, že nezistím, čo je vo vnútri. Na druhú stranu, je tu niečo kvetinové, čo v skutočnosti prináša ten efekt srieborného kovu.

Parfém, ktorý ovoniavam naslepo je 100% tradičná francúzska kompozícia. Tak klasická, že už ani nemôže byť viac “francúzska”. Tak dobrá, ako sa len dá. Samotná skladba parfému je veľmi bohatá a klasická, všetko je na svojom mieste, presne tam, kde by malo byť. Cítim tradičný francúzsky buket (kyticu), ktorý nie je veľmi zvýraznený, ale je tam. Je tam nezvyčajný osviežujúci kovový tón, ktorý udržiava môj záujem. Vieš, čo by to mohlo byť? Labdanum. Zastreľ ma ak sa mýlim a možno sa mýlim, ale myslím si, že je to dymový kvet labdana (cistu) skomponovaný úplne odlišným spôsobom a pripomína mi to jednu inú kompozíciu obsahujúcu tento druh kvetu. Skvelú časť parfému vytvorenú z kvetín a ničoho viac.

Srdce je luxusnejšie, je viac darom ako ódou. Je tu nejaké jemné pačuli, ktoré cítim a drevité podtóny. Je tam krásne cédrové drevo, ktoré tomu dodáva eleganciu.

Pod dymovými tónmi a nejakými podivnými kovovými kvetmi sa skrýva elegantný parfém. Viete ako to v skutočnosti vonia? Predstavte si malú toskánsku dedinu s kamennými domami, so zaprášenými cestami a zakvitnutými pelargóniami na babičkinom okne. Úplne talianský obrázok elegantného, drevito-kvetinového parfému. Jednoznačne je v tej vôni niečo talianske, niečo v spôsobe akým sa pohybuje a rozvíja.

JURAJ: This unusual creation gives me double feeling – metallic and floral. When I tried it for the first time, it was much accentuated metallic note on my skin. Štefan had a little smile on his face because the effect is beautiful and he is guessing that I will not discover what is inside. On the other hand, there is something floral that actually gives the effect of silver metal notes.

The perfume I am smelling on blind is 100% traditional French composition. It is so classic that it can’t be more “Frenchy” than this. This is as good as it gets. The composition itself is very rich and classic, everything is on its own place, right where it should be. I smell traditional French bouquet that is not accentuated a lot, but it is present. There is unusual refreshing metal note that keeps me interested in. You know what that might be? Labdanum. Shoot me if I am wrong and maybe I am, but I think this is a smoky labdanum flower composed on completely different way and it reminds me of one other composition I smelled with that type of flower. The wonderful part of perfume is composed of flowers, nothing else.

The heart is more luxurious, it is more like an offering, like an ode. There is some slight patchouli that I can smell and woody undertones. There is beautiful cedar wood giving on elegance.

After the smoky note and some weird metal flowers stuff, there is an elegant perfume beneath. You know how it actually smells like? Imagine a small Tuscan village with stone houses, dirty roads full of dust and flowers on the grandmother’s window releasing the scent of geranium. Very Italian picture of elegant, woody and floral perfume. There is definitively something Italian about it, something in the way it moves and develops.

This is the perfume, which we tested blindly.

Štefan Kopeščanský: "Okay, now its my turn!"

ŠTEFAN: Ovoniavam papierik. Deje sa tam toho veľa, ale okamžite cítim spojenie. S niečím esenciálnym. S niečím, čo človeka sprevádza od počiatku. Je to dážď. Jeho vôňa vo vzduchu. Prísľub životodárnej energie živlov. Viete čo je „petrichor“? Petrichor je kombináciou slov „petros“ – kameň a „ichor“ slovo z gréckej mytológie označujúce éterickú esenciu, zlaté fluidum prúdiace v žilách bohov.

Petrichor je  "krv kameňov", vôňa, ktorú cítime po daždi. Počas obdobia sucha rastliny produkujú špecifický olej, ktorý spomaľuje ich rast. Molekuly týchto olejov prenikajú do pôdy a do minerálov v pôde. A keď sa spustí dážď - Boom. Koktejl molekúl zo zeme sa rozvíri vzduchom. Spolu s ozónom, geosminom a vlhkým oparom vytvoria špecifickú vôňu. Minerálnu, zemitú, ozónovú, čerstvú a vlhkú.

Toto sú pre mňa hlavné atribúty vône, ktorú držím pod nosom. Samozrejme je tam toho omnoho viac. Výrazné abstraktné kvety podobné konvalinkám, jasne prítomná čerstvá zeleň a geránium. A ovocná ruža. Najpútavejší vnem však vytvára krištáľovo čistý chladný kov. Tiahne sa celou kompozíciou a kontrastuje s pikantným  suchým korením a zemitými tónmi.  Ku koncu sa vôňa zjemní, zaoblí a začne viac vynikať drevo, mach a uhladené pačuli. Stále si však zachováva mokrý tón. Ako v lese po daždi.

Priznám sa, vône s metalickými, ozonickými a vodnými prvkami nie sú pre mňa ničím, o čom by som písal domov, ale táto jedna má pre mňa špecifické miesto. Spája v sebe množstvo kontrastov nádherným spôsobom. Splnila to, čo sľubuje aj jej názov. Jej meno? 5 elementov. Z parfumérskej dielne Ramon Molvizar. Môžete k nej zahorieť láskou (oheň), byť z nej hlavou v oblakoch (vzduch), ostať nohami pevne na zemi (zem) alebo sa do nej celý ponoriť (voda).  Štyri elementy. A piaty? Ten nechám na Vás. No mám tušenie... Toľko vraví moja analýza. Ale parfém je objektom umenia. Umelecká kritika analyzuje a definuje, ale nehovorí nič o dojme. A dojem je niečo veľmi subjektívne. Veď krása sa nenachádza v objekte umenia, ale v oku pozorovateľa.

ŠTEFAN: I am smelling the blotter. A lot happens there, but I immediately feel the connection. Something essential. Something that escorts you from the beginning. It is rain. It’s smell in the air. A promise of life giving energy’s elements. Do you know what “petrichor” means? Petrichor is a combination of words, “petros” – stone, and “ichor” a word from Greek mythology identifying the ethereal essence, golden fluid flowing in god’s veins.

Petrichor is the “blood of stones”, the smell we feel after rain. In a period of drought, plants are producing a specific oil, that slows their growth. Molecules of this oil are penetrating the soil and minerals in the soil. When rain comes – Boom. A cocktail of molecules rises from the soil in the air. Together with ozone, geosmin and humid haze, creates a specific smell. Mineral, earthy, fresh and humid.

Those are the main attributes of the fragrance that I have under my nose. Of course there is much more. Markedly abstract flowers similar to Lily of the valley, clear presence of fresh greenery and geranium. And fruity rose. The most attractive perception is created by crystal clear metallic note. It stretches all over the composition and contrasts with a spicy dry condiment with earthy tones. As in the forest after rain.

I confess, for me, fragrances with metallic, ozone and watery elements is nothing to write home about, but this one has a specific place. It joins a lot of contrasts in a delighting way. It fulfils what its name is. 5 Elements. From the perfumer’s work-shop of Ramon Molvizar. With it you may flare up with love (fire), feel with your head in the clouds from it (air), remain with your feet firmly on the ground (earth) or immerse in it (water). For elements. And the fifth? That I leave up to you. But I have a feeling….that much my analyses says to me. But perfume is an object of art. Artistic criticism analyses and defines, but says nothing of sensation. And sensation is something very subjective. Beauty is not in the object of art, but in the eyes of the viewer.

Ramon Molvizar - 5elements

JURAJ: Celý môj výlet na Slovensko ostane špeciálnou spomienkou, ale tento test naslepo bol unikátnym zážitkom. Obával som sa, že nebudem vedieť rozpoznať zložky a neuhájim svoju pozíciu blogera, naštastie to vyzerá, že sa tak nestalo. Parfémový brat, Štefan, bol slušnou výzvou a ja som bol natešený na písanie hodnotenia “naslepo”. Najvzrušujúcejšou časťou bolo, že parfém bol vybraný nezainteresovanou osobou. Rád by som si to zopakoval opäť, špeciálne so Štefanom, pretože sa mi páčilo ako sa stretli naše vášne. Je potešením byť konfrontovaný s takým kalibrom čuchu a vášne. Obrovská skúsenosť, kvôli ktorej si myslím, že sa to bude opakovať! Ďakujem Štefan!

JURAJ: My whole trip to Slovakia will rest in special memory, but this blind smelling test was unique experience. I was afraid not to detect the notes and that I will not justify my position of a blogger, fortunately, it seems that didn’t happen. Brother in Perfumes, Stefan, was a decent challenger and it was exciting to write a blind test. The most exciting part was that the perfume was chosen by a neutral person. I would like to repeat it again, especially with Stefan because I like how our passions collide. It is a pleasure to be confronted to that caliber of nose and passion. Massive experience for which I think it will be repeated! Thank you Štefan!

ŠTEFAN: Len pár vecí na svete vonia viac ako úžasne. Čerstvá upražená káva, čerstvo upečený chlieb, rozpálené kakao a letný dážď po dlhotrvajúcom suchu. A o tom je pre mňa tento parfém. O dojme dažďa. O tom jedinečnom momente letného dňa, keď sa odrazu zdvihne vietor, rozvíri prach na prašných cestách a mraky sa začnú valiť po oblohe. Vzduch sa zmení a oblohu pretnú blesky. Veľké kvapky začnú kropiť chodníky a vpíjať sa do suchej zeme. Všetko sa udeje tak rýchlo. Všetko je odrazu zmáčané. Hlina, tráva, stromy, kvety, asfalt, kovové strechy domov.  Svet okolo sa rozvonia, ako keď zalejete čaj vodou. Tak osviežujúce a očistné. A vy ste v strede toho všetkého. Zrazu máte chuť žiť. Šialene, rýchlo a naplno. Na ex. Cítim to dnes rovnako, ako som to cítil vtedy, keď som o tejto vôni napísal prvýkrát.

Stretnutie s Jurajom bolo pre mňa zážitkom a potešením. Bolo príjemné stretnúť parfémového nadšenca a môcť sa s ním podeliť  o túto záľubu. Písať spoločný príspevok bolo pre mňa oživením zabehnutých koľají. Do poslednej chvíle sme nevedeli, čo napísal ten druhý. A dokonca! Juraj do poslednej chvíle nevedel ani to, o akej vôni písal, keďže som mu to prezradil len pár minút pred uverejnením príspevku. O to väčší zážitok to pre mňa bol. A že to zvládol výborne, ste mohli posúdiť sami. Je vidieť, že už čo to ovoňal. Juraj ďakujem.

ŠTEFAN: Only few things in the world have a more than amazing smell. Freshly roasted coffee, freshly baked bread, hot cocoa powder and summer rain after a long period of drought. And this perfume is all about that. The notion of rain. That unique moment of a summer day, when suddenly the wind rises, swirls the dust on dusty roads and clouds roll in the sky. The air changes and the sky is crossed by thunderbolts. Big drops start to fall and spray the sidewalks soaked up in the dry earth. Everything happens so quickly. Suddenly everything is wetted. The earth, the grass, the trees, the flowers, the tar, the metallic roof of the houses. The world around smells as when you us water over tee. So fresh and cleansing. And you are in the middle of it all. Suddenly you have a great appetite to live. Madly, quickly and to the fullest. In one gulp. I feel the same today, as when I felled then, when I wrote for the first time about this fragrance.

Meeting Juraj was a pleasant experience and pleasure. It was pleasant to meet a perfume enthusiast and be able to share with him this avocation. To write a joint blog was a refreshing change from the regular path. Till the last moment we did not know what the other wrote. And till the last moments, Juraj did not know what perfume he writes about. I disclosed it only at in the last minutes before publishing this blog. This made it an even greater experience for me. And that he coped excellently you may judge by yourself. It shows that he already smelled a lot. Thank you Juraj.
